With his brother Emanuel and his cousin Leopold Einstein, he founded the Ullman, Einstein Company, a liquor business in Cleveland, Ohio. When it was dissolved in 1919, his son Monroe and grandson Rufus founded the Ullman and Einstein Realty Company. Rufus had previously served with the United States Army in World War I. Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863 yet remained in the service until his company mustered out in November 1865. The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864.
